Abstract:

The DarkSide ransomware has wreaked havoc with its notorious high ransom demands and double extortion techniques of stealing victim data and threatening to expose it to the public. In this talk, I will go through the origins of the DarkSide ransomware, how the threat actor groups attracted affiliates to spread their malicious creation, how the victims are extorted, and finally go inside the negotiations between the victim and the threat actor groups. We will then dive into the pipeline company breach that affected the Southeastern United States.

The presentation will then conclude on what is next for the DatkSide ransomware by looking at alleged rebranding of its code to avoid law enforcement pressure.
